Mill Hollow - The Perfect Family Fishery

By Gaylen Webb

If you seek a good family fishery, and don't mind a few neighbors looking for the same thing, you inight try Mill Hollow Reservoir, east of Heber City (follow Hwy. 35 southeast from Francis).

Tom Pettengill, Division or Wildlife Resources Sport Fish Coordinator, says Mill Hollow Reservoir is a very popular, consistent fishery, albeit heavily used.

Fishermen and women who get in early in the spring or late in the fall can usually have good success with brook trout; however, rainbow and albino trout are most consistently caught throughout the year.

Nightcrawlers are the most popular bait at the reservoir, but flies and spinners also work well.

Because of the heavy fishing pressure, the DWR stocks the reservoir with rainbow and albino catchables almost every other week through the summer, Pettengill says. The reservoir is also stocked with fingerling brook trout.

Since Mill Hollow produces such good fishing and is so popular, Pettengill says the water has been recognized as one that needs more fish. (He notes that to get more fish, the hatcheries in the state would have to produce more fish, which they can do with the new techniques available, but it requires more funding, and that is another story.)

Mill Hollow reservoir is surrounded by pines and quaking aspens. A well-kept Forest Service campground is within walking distance. The reservoir is not big enough for large boats, but is suited nicely for canoes or rubber rafts.

It takes about an hour and a half to reach Mill Hollow from Salt Lake City, depending on your vehicle and how fast you travel the last eight miles of bumpy, dirt road.

Mill Hollow is unique in that it is owned by the DWR. The DWR controls the amount of water leaving the reservoir, which keeps the water level fairly stable. Pettengill says a few years ago the reservoir had problems with oxygenation, and fishing was poor. The fresher, oxygen-carrying water on top was escaping over the spillway, leaving the older, oxygen-poor water underneath.

Pettengill says the DWR has made some changes in the reservoir to keep the fresh, oxygen carrying water in the reservoir, while removing the older, oxygen-poor water.

While Mill Hollow is a consistently good producer, the DWR is concerned about too much fishing pressure, especially if the Forest Service paves the road to the reservoir and expands the campground, as has been discussed.
