The future on Mo's Valley in St George, Utah: A climbers paradise

St. George City in Southern Utah is famous for its unique variety of climbing opportunities. Climbers enjoy Southern Utah during the winter because of the beautiful weather and lack of winter snow.

Mo's Valley

St. George is also one of the fasted growing City's in the United States only two hours north of Las Vegas. As lands are being developed and turned into housing developments the subdivisions are pressing closer and closer to the once remote climbing areas that we have all enjoyed and taken for granted.

One of these areas, known as "Mo's Valley", sits on State Institutional Trust Lands (SITLA). The main purpose of SITLA ground is to make money for the state, thus much of the land is sold to the highest bidder.

SITLA also has the right to "lease" their land to excavation companies who can then come and "farm" large rocks to be used as front yard décor. In the last two years as local climbers have been hiking into Mo's valley, (a popular bouldering area), they have noticed many of the boulders on the way in have been removed. The once remote area is being trodden with tractor paths leaving destruction as they take away the rocks.

The area of Mo's valley is a fairly protected area making it very difficult to excavate out the famous climbing boulders, however; as the developments press forward it is becoming more of a concern that these areas be preserved and protected.

Local climbers have jumped on board with one of the St. George City council members who has indicated they will do everything in their power to help us protect the area. St. George City might go as far as purchasing the area as a bouldering park but they need to be convinced that Mo's valley is really that popular.

If you haven't been to Mo's valley in St. George it is definitely one of best kept secrets in Southern Utah. Mo's valley sits in a natural depression that is covered with large unique boulders. There are over 50 routes that have been rated and named. A new guide book is due out in December that gives details of all the routes. Information on directions and routes can be obtained by contacting the local climbing shop, Outdoor Outlet of St. George.
