The Hardware Ranch Wildlife Management Area usually opens mid-December. Staff at the WMA, which is operated by the Division of Wildlife Resources, welcomes the public to participate in the excellent elk viewing opportunities available there every winter. "As the temperatures drop and snow begins to accumulate, we should start seeing significant numbers of elk," says Chris Haller, Hardware Ranch manager.
The WMA offers a visitor center, restaurant, gift shop and sleigh rides to see the elk. Cost for the sleigh rides is $5 for those ages 9 and older and $3 for those ages 4 to 8. Children 3 and younger ride for free. No reservations are needed. "Dress warmly and bring your camera to capture a memory of these elusive animals," Haller says.
The WMA's facilities are open Mondays through Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The facilities are closed Dec. 25 for Christmas. The WMA is open during its regular operating hours on Christmas Eve and New Years Day.
The WMA's restaurant serves a variety of meals and features a night sleigh ride/dinner combo. Reservations are required for the sleigh ride/dinner combo.
